Keeping this dispatch on the shorter side because I spent the week knocking out my rewrite from various friends’ air-conditioned apartments (infinite gratitude to Sarah, Michael, Kishori, Chelsea!) and my new desk at the Center for Fiction (join me!) I finished on America’s birthday, proofread yesterday and now I have a hopelessly romantic 99-page PDF. Hence, more output than input but this is what crossed my eye, captured my brain:
A community stew I would like to try.
The Artist’s Way, which I was supposed to do with AR early pandemic and am only now picking up, Jared by my side (we’re entering Chapter 2 next week if you’d like to come on the ride with us here)
The city’s first Narcan vending machine, already saving lives.
A natural pool I would like to visit.
Throwing a bunch of beets on the grill, blitzing to oblivion with yogurt and ice cubes, channeling my Eastern European roots, making the kitchen look like an abject murder scene.
Yusef Salaam, a member of the exonerated Central Park Five, now a City Council member.
A public orchard of over one hundred hybrid trees, grafted with varieties of fruit that used to grow all over the city but had been lost to the industrialization of agriculture.
The Transgender Family Handbook - “while it’s their journey alone, you have the opportunity, and obligation, to help them to become who they are.”
How to plant a micro-forest in L.A. (or beyond).
We Eat Here by Candace Thompson of The C.U.R.B.
Heart-shaped cake raffle alert! Yu and Me Books, the first Asian-American, woman-owned bookstore in the city needs to close for a year to recover after a devastating fire. If you donate to their GoFundMe, DM Abi Balingit a screenshot of your donation and you’ll be entered into her raffle.
Donations from June subscriptions went to the Rachel Carson Council, the jaimie branch Foundation and the Worker's Justice Project Fund. This newsletter is forever free, but paid subscriptions are deeply welcome. If you are able to subscribe, 100% goes towards good people/orgs doing great work in the world and you can see where donations go here.
